HONESTY HOUR: I FLIPPED OVER FROM CHINSTAND A FEW DAYS AGO. yup that thing everybody’s afraid of, happened. 🙈 the inside of my lip is bruised and my nose hurts a bit but otherwise i‘m totally fine. i don’t really remember much. i wasn‘t warmed up and i was frustrated and decided (without thinking!!!!) to kick up. i just remember there being too much momentum and losing balance and i was like ”fuckkk my neck“ and then i was on the floor and my lip hurt. 😅 apparently i fell to the side, there’s even a picture because i had the remote release in my hand (i’m gonna share it in my story) 🙈 so what can we all learn from this? DO NOT KICK UP INTO A CHINSTAND. ALSO DON’T KICK UP INTO A HEADSTAND. DO YOU HEAR ME?! all the inversions where the neck is involved, especially these two are to be attempted with control and not using momentum. i obviously know this as a teacher. but that day my ego got the better of me because seriously if i think about it, i wouldn’t EVER tell someone to kick into chinstand. just no 🤦🏼♀️ it forced me to take a step back and think about some things. no more stupid decisions made out of frustration and more listening to my body. some days i‘m too tired for inversions, gotta accept that 🙏🏼 have a lovely tuesday everyone and let me hear your thoughts. 🙏🏼 #yogawithbettina#chinstand#backbendlove

Day 2 of #theupsidedowntype challenge. This is my first time hosting and participating in a challenge. I am loving the new friends and diabetic yogis involved!
Today is pincha mayurasana/dolphin pose - duality of strength and surrender.
Life with diabetes is the balance of opposites. One must be strong and stable yet willing to be vulnerable and surrender to the inevitable ups and downs that you have absolutely no control over. Yoga can help. Here’s how:
In the yoga sutras Patanjali lays out the yoga of action: Kriya Yoga. In these steps one learns how to influence the unruly mind dominated by constant change. The first step is tapas: self restraint, discipline and inner strength. The second step is svadyaya: self study and inquiry. Breath and practice can help to develop your self awareness and translate this into your health and life with type one diabetes. Often it is understanding what you can do differently. Step three is isvarapranidhana: surrender. Surrender to something bigger than you. You are doing all that you can through tapas and svadhyaya the surrender builds self compassion and loving kindness.

I like this quote a lot! I think when we are secure in our choices it’s a lot harder to for people to change our minds. Its good to be open minded to others opinions (and constructive criticism) at times, but there are always going to be people who just straight up don’t agree with your path. And that’s okay. I just think it’s important to trust that feeling that is there we are following the path meant for us, that even when it seems crazy and not everyone understands it, we are going to end up where we are supposed to. Just some Monday night rambling 😉✌🏼

There is a HELL of a lot more good in this world than there is bad.. still.
How do I know?
Because people can and will continue to say please and thank you. (Because I’ll be one of them)
People can be polite. (Because I’ll be one of them)
People can do a good deed without expecting anything in return.(Because I’ll be one of them)
People still smile at a beautiful sunrise and cry when they’re emotionally exhausted. (Because I’ll be one of them)
We can still continue to be a loving community. (If you’ll be one of them)
Remember it’s not always wise to fight fire with fire.
Instead breathe kindness, compassion and love.
Be aware of your words and the power they have.
There is still more good than bad because I can still write this with the intent you’ll take it and do good with it.

Last week after class a young girl came running up to me with pure yoga joy!🌟She practiced a little at home, and just started to come to the studio. She said she loved the energy at the studio, felt amazing after class & just wants to learn and grow. Maybe one day even do the teacher training.
I was taken by this young girl’s energy. It reminded me of me when I started practicing. I still love yoga!🧘🏻♀️
She was really refreshing in midst of all that’s been going on in the yoga world.
Yoga bashing, people coming out with horrific “me too” stories within the Yoga community, and last weeks firing of Besel Van Der Kolk for abuse accusations. He is one of the leading researchers in trauma & healing, and wrote “The Body Keeps the Score”, which has been one of my go to books for my private practice & knowledge base. Plus, this weekend’s “yoga” drama between 2 corporations & a big name yogi.😞 After reading both blogs on Elephant Journal, I saw truth in both sides. The truth is rarely black & white.
Sometimes there is a disconnect in why we do this work, to connect to people & heal communities. When we get beyond that, the ego influences choices & we can get side-tracked.
When this student came running up to me in her innocence & sheer excitement, it made me realize how things in the yoga world have gone astray.
I’m speaking up more these days because of the shit that has been infiltrating the practice & lifestyle that I hold so dear to my heart. I will stand by the people that have been abused or treated unfairly, and I’ll stand by the practice that has not only been a big part of my healing journey, but one that I witness daily helping others. Daily.
People are taking this practice & smearing all over it with greed, ego, control & entitlement. As with everything else happening out in the world right now, maybe there is no place safe from the uprising, and maybe that’s what is needed for the shift.
To come back to truth & love.🙏🏼
Guys ... I am here to tell you that I am oh so human. .
Life takes hold.
I fall behind.
I shut myself out.
I let excuses win.
I get lazy.
I eat candy.
I ignore important things to focus on “more fun” things.
I sleep through my alarm. ... this list could go on and on.
But the difference between the old me who always failed and me now?! (Besides my awesome community) .
I get back up.
I don’t quit.
I work harder.
I don’t give up completely and throw in the towel.
I don’t think all of it is too much for me to complete... maybe just too much for now.
I revamp, clear my head, and think of a game plan and how to attack it best. .
I keep going. And trying. And I’m a better person for that. And you are too. Dont let anyone scold your ATTEMPT at success. Failing forward is a thing. Trial and error is a thing. Trusting the process is a damn real thing. .
Trust in yourself and trust in the process. You can succeed at anything you put your mind to. Don’t let someone else quit on your dreams for you ... including you. .

Here’s me working on my jump tuck yesterday afternoon after attempting to go to morning Yoga and failing miserably (oh SF downtown parking). This is one of the longest I’ve managed to hold my tuck. Still have to remind myself to tuck my legs into my ribs!!! Any suggestions or recommendations on form? 🖤
