MENTAL HEALTH? 🧠
so I thought a great but also somewhat obvious place to begin with my scientific yoga posts was with
‘Yoga for Mental Health’, the benefits, the studies,
the evidence 🤷🏻♀️
Over the last week I have been posting about my experiences with seizures,
a neurological disorder.
But broadening are knowledge of the effects of yoga
on the brain,
let’s first take a look at an area a lot of us can relate to, mental health.
The word is that Yoga is the new natural medicine for your mental health. If you have tried and persevered with your yoga practice you’d probably agree with that statement.
I know yoga came into my life when I needed it most,
I was critically underweight and my mindset was all over the place, and since then I have never let the practice go, even though I am considered recovered.
This is my personal experience,
but what does science say?
Available reviews show how Yoga reduces the impact of exaggerated stress responses, helpful in both anxiety and depression. By reducing stress and anxiety, the stress responses are modulated, reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the levels of the hormone cortisol, as published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.
Harvard Health Publishing also agrees with this statement, publishing an article showing how Yoga reduces the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and easing respiration,
so the body is able to respond to stress more flexibly 💪
If we look at conducted studies to do with this, the University of Utah evidences that those who practiced yoga had the highest pain threshold and lowest pain-related brain activity through an MRI, in comparison to a group of people with fibromyalgia (considered a stress related illness) and a group of healthy volunteers,
after conducting a study to do with this topic.
Showing how stress and pain responses are intertwined.
In summary, practicing yoga and meditation has
proved a successful option to manage stress as a non-pharmacological treatment. Although, further studies are needed to identify which yoga may be most beneficial. Nevertheless, you could find what works best for you by testing these theories first hand 🙏🏽❤️
This week we’re all about the courses. Begin a practice, deepen a practice, discover the love of Practice - Yoga is just that a practice we dedicate ourselves to day after day. (Maybe just start with one!) A practice to deepen our understanding of ourselves off the mat. Course with @carly_mountain starts tonight 5.45 - 6.45 just a coupe of places left. Then we have two beginners courses Wednesdays with @yoga.alyce 6pm - 7.15 and Thursdays 5.45 - 7.00 with @amylbeard
One of the things I love most about the beautiful practice that is Yoga is the people who you meet and connect with through it (SO many not pictured here). I have been so unbelievably blessed to have met such wonderful, kind, funny, down to earth souls across this magical world. Taking this gratitude with me into my day, week, month, year... 💞💫
Have spent two really nice days in Munich with Andy. It started with Sunday brunch at amazing @emiko_restaurant with my parents. Since they have been divorced for nearly 30 years it was one of the rare occasions I have mommy and daddy together. Spending time with both of them together makes me (and the 5 years old me) very happy. Also the (vegan & not vegan) brunch was amazing, i highly recommend trying.
A walk through old Munich, yoga and meditation with @patrickyogi and a hot soup with my soul sister @iraeckerts after class made the day perfect. So grateful for Sundays like this one. It is so important to make space for nourishing the soul. It feels like fuel that keeps me going through a week full of exciting meetings and project planning. Be curious, some new ideas are gonna be revealed soon. 📷 @gritsiwonia

Open heart ~ open mind ❤️💆🏽
An intention of mine this year is to open my heart space and allow love to enter my life....
Loving myself is the first step in doing that and honestly I can say hand on heart that I fully, deeply love who I am...all of me🤗💫 (it's taken 28 years!)
I love that I'm "the weird one", I laugh at my own jokes and I care deeply about people I've never met. I love that I eat far too much and I always sing when I'm meant to be quiet. I love that I'm brave and I go against the grain and I love my strong, muscular body that carries me through life 💪🏽
All the parts of me I now love are the parts that I despised growing up. I hated how awkward I was and how different I felt....and yet as I get older, these facets of my soul are the parts I cherish most, as they make me ME ❤️ We are all so intrinsically different and yet we're also inherently the same, in that we're in this together...sharing similar emotions about the world and ourselves.
Be your own best friend. Choose love. Choose life. Choose yourself 😊🙏🏽
LIVE YOUR BLISS 🙌

Soon after I turned 18, I left South Africa and flew halfway across the world to the USA. There I worked at Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbour, as a lifeguard, for 8 months.
I had only just left school and was unsure of who I was and my purpose in this world.
I remember going back home feeling even more confused, having lost interest in the things that were so important to me when I was in school.
I didn't know what I should be doing with my life or where to even begin looking.
As time has passed, I've realised that life is a lot less about what you choose to do, and a lot more about how much of it you enjoy.
That doing/being a certain thing or way does not define who you are, but rather has the power to enhance your experience on this earth.
It took me a long time to figure out that there is so much more to the journey than the destination or end point. That the ride, in itself, can be just as exhilarating.
I still don't think that I have it all figured out, and perhaps I never will.
But that just means that I have endless journeys and possibilities ahead, where I can learn and grow and discover more about myself, this beautiful world and the people in it ♡
Happy Tuesday everyone!
Waking up and feeling like I don't want to move 🙈
Feel like any asana practice will just end up with me like this, lying on my mat and just breathing 🌟
But that's ok 👌 and I am perfectly down with that for this busy Tuesday! 🎆
Slow and steady wins the race 🐢
Crow Pose (Bakasana). How long can you hold this pose? ✨ I can last for a little while in it. I would like to get my knees a bit more up on my upper arms and my back a little more relaxed. 🌿 #goyogi

Excuse me while I curl up in a ball.
On the floor.
I'm just NOT feeling myself as of late. I always get these spurts of depression in the winter and this year it's pretty bad😪😔
Most of the time, lately, I just want to stay in bed. Under the safety of my covers. With my dog. Throwing on some mindless show for background noise while I stare at the ceiling.
Sleep is gold.... an escape from reality for awhile.
Dreams. I love dreams. Because I can go into a new world.
Escape for awhile.
Putting on a smile for people is getting harder every day.
Getting out of bed in the morning, putting on makeup, going into work..... is getting harder everyday.
I don't know.
People are pissing me off.
So that doesn't help.
I'm so tired...

One of our amazing Brisbane Level 1 Teacher Training Groups. What an amazing day filled with energy!
It’s not yoga, but it feels like it. Same concentration in the body, control of breath, attention to transition...and also improvisation, moving outside the mat, moving out of alignment.
I love yoga and it will always by my home, but there’s a whole big world out there 🌎 Let’s see what happens when I actually train outside of yoga.
Thank you @rebekahletch for letting me practice in your gorgeous space and only letting me take this ONE time!! My perfectionistic tendency would be to film again and again until I held that final zombie... but real time I don’t hit everything the first time I try 😂🤷🏻♀️
Ninja video skills by @mvmt_art who introduced me to movement flows 😘
wearing @flo 🙏
I took this photo on April 1st, 2017, while visiting the fam in #NewHampshire. I was two months into my yoga practice, addicted to posting daily yoga photos, and hadn’t warmed up before running out into the #snowfall first thing in the morning and sinking into this deep #hamstringstretch. My dad saw me and yelled, “What are you DOING?!,” through the porch door, to which I yelled back, “YOGA CHALLENGE!,” which clarified nothing.
I definitely do not recommend being this careless with one’s body; my hamstrings were strained for the next several months. On the flip side, an incredible photographer, @pketron, selected this photo for inclusion in @myfilmnorth’s “The N°rth,” a Mobile Photography Exhibition in Saint Paul, Minnesota opening today and running through February 6th! If you happen to be in MN, swing through and let me know if this shot was worth 4-5 months of uncomfortable #forwardfolds. 😩😆 As is only appropriate, it’s entitled, “What are you DOING?!”
