Today’s 13 mile (2,500 ft of gain) run was just what I needed after spending the weekend working on a take home school project for the middle little (aka let’s see which parent can spend the most money at Hobby Lobby and eventually take over the child’s project to compete with the other parents in class because don’t lie, that’s what all home projects end up becoming). Miles and miles alone in this beautiful terrain feeds my soul (and gets me off of kid duty for a few hours 😉).

🙄 Good evening friends 🖐🙌 Did you get a workout in today? The weather here was gorgeous, so I took advantage and ran a healthy 5 miles at the park. I never look at my phone during a run, but I need to start because one of my pet peeves is barely missing the full mile. I would have ran the extra .30 miles to make it an even 6 mile run had I know. Grr 😶 #runnerproblems

My first name is Zintkala, it means Red Bird in Lakota. My Tribe is Oglala Lakota-Sioux Tribe (Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota). I currently live in western Massachusetts working for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. I began running with the track team at the South Middle School in Rapid City, SD.
I run because it seems to release bad feelings I have and clears my mind. All I have to focus on, while trail running, is what log or rock to jump over and remember my route back. I hope to inspire Native girls who never saw themselves as athletic.
Running reminds me of how healthy and athletic the Oglala people were. My ancestors motivate me. When I'm running it reminds me how awesome and thrilling it is do be human.————————————————————

What a fun race today! And a beautiful, cool day for it! I was TWO SECONDS short of my current PR. I really booked it in the last stretch but I just missed it. This time last year, I was not running 5ks this fast. I was about 2-3 minutes slower. So that’s what I reminded myself at the donut shop afterwards, to put my finish time into perspective. (Oh you know I got the donuts). The last time I missed a PR by two seconds was last fall, and I came back the following week to beat it by about 20 seconds. I was so determined to not fall short again! Hopefully I can do the same at another one of my spring races! And then of course, working towards getting into the 20’s....which is my ultimate 2018 goal! Good job to all my peeps who raced this weekend, or just had awesome workouts! I lost my voice from coughing so much during my race....I think some illness might be creepin! I’m staying on the couch for the rest of the night with my orange juice, vitamins, water, tea and Superman movies. Have a great Monday tomorrow, peeps!! 🏃🏼♀️💜🍩
Chris pointed out that the only time I’ve left Squid’s side since we picked him up yesterday was when I walked into CVS to buy his over the counter medications 😂 Training will resume as normal tomorrow, for now I’ll be enjoying all the walks and snugs with @iggy_squid. I needed this weekend to be the clingiest most extra dog mom in the world.

Let’s talk discipline...the discipline it takes to use the prescribed method of running you have been given by your doctor while overcoming injury. It feels like 20 steps backwards from where I was at as a runner. HOWEVER, I am so extremely grateful to be out running again....it’s simply this, a sweet mental release from all that goes on around you...maybe it’s the endorphins ..I’m not really sure but I know how good it feels....even though I am not completely healed and running the way I was!!

Took an unplanned rest day today and it feels so good. Yesterday I did double work outs and was exhausted. Sometimes the body knows best, now you call can hold me accountable to get my workout in on Tuesday instead. #newweek
I don’t have a zen garden in my office to play with on stressful days so figured I’d go rake the sand pit (bigger is always better right?) 😂
3 hours of sleep last night + Tired legs + 30 mph winds + wanting energetic legs for long run tomorrow = slow paced miles today!
Hope you all have fun plans this weekend! Doing anything fun? Obviously my my most fun thing will be my long run 🤗. In addition to that, I’m hoping to get a pedicure in, catch up on some rest, go to a movie with girlfriends, and to make some good food (prep for next week too)!
