I probably don't have to convince you to eat protein. Most know it's good for the muscles & it doesn't have a reputation for making us fat...so what's to lose? And yet, most of us don't get enough.
Proteins are the building blocks of the body. In addition to forming tissues, proteins act as enzymes. Enzymes are the managers and catalysts necessary for ALL biochemical processes in the body. In other words, without protein, the other macros you consume can't do what they're supposed to do.
All proteins are a combination of 20 amino acids, which go on to make the following:
•Neurotransmitters: This includes serotonin & GABA and other neurotransmitters necessary for mental health
•Muscle production: 95% of muscle mass is made up of amino acids (including the heart)
•Hormone production: amino acids are an important component of sex hormones
•RNA & DNA regulation: no big deal, just making sure our genes function properly
If you're an athlete (or like me, a normal person who does athletic-type stuff), then medium branch chain amino acids are critical for muscle repair and growth. Look for foods or supplements with valine, leucine, & isoleucine in particular! These are most important because they are "essential"- meaning our bodies cannot produce them, we must get them from food or supplements.

Something about this month makes me reflect on all that I’m thankful for. Right now, I am bursting with gratitude for my beautiful baby boy and the "family first" lifestyle my husband and I are creating together.
