Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day. ✒ Dalai Lama
You must have read a lot about Dhankar village. A place not miss while in Spiti. A steep dusty lanes of four hour drive from mainland Tabo take you this cliff village. This village is at an approx altitude of 12,774 feet above sea level inhabited by some 50+ people. There is a newly built buddhist Monestory which houses monks and nuns. Now let's make your read more meaningful by introducing a hidden lake which very few of explorers are aware of.
Beside all this, did you know there is a fresh water high altitude Dhankar Lake? A beautiful #lake fed by #glaciouers. Dhankar Lake is a five kilometers uphill trek in a barren and dusty path. This dusty trek takes you from 12000 feet to 13500+ feet in a matter of hours. So this trek will test you #endurance and stamina. The trek can be done during the month of May to September. The conditions here changes very frequently from warm to windy and extreme cold as you assend uphill.
This lake is frozen for almost eight months. For Bagpakers the banks of Dhankar Lake is good place to pitch a tent ⛺ with surrounding view of high #Himalayas. You must carry firewoods with you as this lake is middle of nowhere. Dhankar village and Dhankar Lake is worth the time and truly justify the aseence of Spiti valley. . 📷 @nomadik_trailz
I reached here late at night, totally unknown to what lies ahead. You see, reaching Italian Dolomites, or Alps like they say, was not easy.
I hopped on and off from one bus to another without having proper lunch but snacks. Everyone raised their brows when they heard that I want to reach this place without a car with my 4 bags – because well it is not a straight path. But I had to go, there was an itch within me to look at this place for myself.
It was 11 PM and the 19-year-old girl smiled warmly at the Youth Hostel totally impressed and said “you are from India touring here all alone? I would love to do this someday too, but maybe with my friends. Who knows maybe at your age I will be visiting India” and we had roar of laughter like it was the wittiest comment ever.
And that is the thing about travelling and not sticking to just one place. Life becomes a joke in itself – in a good way. Basically, you start to find happiness even in tiniest bit of things, you stop taking things seriously, you become light headed, everything looks like a dream in which you are actually living.
That is the thing about traveling, it helps you find comfort in unknown places and people, you make such temporary places your home, forever.
