I saw The Martian on audio at my library when I was looking for books to listen to during my big sewing extravaganza over the holidays. I snatched it up since my copy has been unread on my shelf for quite awhile. .
I’m glad to have finally read it and I have to say that I’m glad I did this book on audio! Im not sure I would have liked it as well if I’d read it. First of all, the narrator was awesome, but there are plenty of technical space/scientific bits and it often feels like you’re getting a lot of information at once. It was a lot more enjoyable to absorb listening to the narrator. Also, there was a space pod launch sequence that was definitely way cooler on audio than I could have imagined reading on my own. .
All I know is if I’d been stranded on Mars, I’d have died of a panic attack before any of the other immediate threats. It was fascinating to listen to Mark think through each new problem he was faced with and how he could solve it with the materials he had available to him. He was basically a Martian McGyver, and I loved his brand of humor .
I even got a little emotional as I listened to this story. It’s an emotionally exhausting story (at least it was for me) and I found myself tearing up a bit a couple times at the end. Ha. .
I haven’t seen the film yet, but I plan to now that I’ve finished the book. If you’ve seen the film, do you recommend it? If you had the chance, would you go into space? (I would definitely NOT)
Take me to your top-shelf. 👽💨 Far-out articles this week (swipe).
