Mid-December and the spring pullets are keeping us in eggs. 🥚 This is why we get chicks every spring, and come fall we process the 4 year old laying hens. Laying hens are not backyard pets for us, they are a source of eggs. Because of that we have to practice flock management and bring in young blood and process the older ones who have dropped off in laying. They have a great life, and truly “free range”. They are let out in the morning and put themselves to bed at dark and allowed to go wherever they desire. Going to the coop to collect eggs to make an omelette is not a novelty for us, it’s our sole source of an essential staple. Without eggs there is no homemade pasta, baking, or a whole lot of breakfast foods. We need the spring pullets to keep us in eggs through the winter, and they replace the oldest hens that become our food. This is the circle of life here, and how we approach all of our meat and a lot of fruits and veggies. It could be two months before our meat chickens are ready to be processed and if we run out of breast or thigh, we go without until processing time. Same scenario if we run out of corn, tomato sauce, or many other foods. It truly makes me appreciate my meals that much more 😋 #eggsinabasket#fresheggs#colorfuleggs#freerange#freerangeeggs#homegrown#prettyeggs

Sometimes, a step out into nature is the best way to clear your head, meditate and rewind. Our environment around us has a great deal of power over our health and our minds. As we go through our life journies, we must always remember to appreciate the small yet bountiful gifts the world gives us. #SaludisLife#saludismeditation

From a couple of nights ago: I worry that I don't give a rounded picture of our life as farmers. There really is a lot of cheeriness and contentment, but there's also a good measure of frustration and exhaustion. Here's a picture of buckets filling from a couple of splits in a broken hose. We forgot to drain the rest of the hoses and they froze. Our house is now full of melting, poop covered hoses and water had to be carried about 500 feet to the animals (many many buckets). This picture was taken at midnight. Tonight: two litters of piglets! Moved a bunch of round bales )to give piglets a better wind break), moved 1,000+ gallons of milk out of the livestock trailer and into the heated shed so it wouldn't freeze, fed more milk, expect to be done around 12-1 am. 16F. The days have been really damn long lately, but good.
Such an amazing day ... we are so thankful to have a new raw dairy farm @green_pastures_raw_milk_dairy - just 45 min from us ... wonderful folks and Brown Swiss cows 🐄 .
My kids had the incredible opportunity to see the cows during making time ... from cow, to chill tank... to bottle .. all in minutes. That, my friend .. is what real milk is! .
That’s definitely not something that you can get at the grocery store... even if you but organic - your milk is far from this top notch quality. .
The owners are simply wonderful people who have a passion for their girls and for “real” food - for my kids to see the real “farm to table” circle is nothing short of incredible. .
As for my kids, they talked about this experience all the way home and they are so excited to be able to drink brown cow milk every week 🐄🐄
Support the Homegrown Organic Act today! If we invest in increasing organic agriculture, we can protect our environment and make homegrown organic food more accessible for more Americans. @repanniekuster@senbobcasey

I’ll be honest with you all. I used to eat bread every single day. Sometimes 2 to 3 times a day. Now I only eat bread on special occasions or when I’m on vacation. Seriously give up bread for a week and see how much of a difference it makes in your weight loss journey or in your overall physic. I’ve noticed a drastic difference just reducing my bread intake to every so often.
I made this juicy burger with two lettuce butter leafs. I promise you it still taste just as great without the bread!

On occasion when we sell our fish at farmer's markets or off the boat at Fishermen's Terminal, we experience customers approaching us with skepticism. They'll give us the side-eye and say something like "okay but you guys didn't ACTUALLY catch this fish, right? This is all just marketing." It's like they're trying to catch us in a lie...and frankly? We love it a whole lot.
In this wacky modern world of global food markets and middle men, it's smart as heck to question where your meals are coming from, so don't be afraid to play food detective. Ask about the chain of custody. Stay skeptical. Demand to see the #receipts. In our case, we're happy to show you a mountain of fish tickets signed by Pete and Jonah (apologies in advance for the handwriting). You officially have our permission to grill us if we have your permission to talk your ear off about why we've chosen to direct-market our catch.
We're proud to be partnered with markets who also understand the importance of a clear and unbroken chain of custody in the food they sell. Now more than ever, it's important to know where your food comes from and we're happy to oblige. 🐟

Trying to take things day by day because everything is just passing by too quickly right now! That being said, as the year closes I’ve also been shuffling through ideas of what avenue I want to focus this page on. Question: what would you guys like to see for future posts? .
In my bowl: steelcut oats, an Asian pear, pumpkin seeds, nut butter, flax and cinnamon
