I precept some Harvard medical students, and enjoy cultivating less concrete aspects of being a healthcare provider. Staying motivated and self doubt were today's lessons. Knowledge and skills can be learned, but without the right motivation and intentions, it's meaningless. You're not here to learn for your exams or to demonstrate your prowess on rounds. Learn to teach, learn for your patients, stop complaining, and never seek recognition for your accomplishments.
It's also in the nature of medicine that you'll be wrong. You'll come up short. You'll make mistakes. You won't always know the answer. And that's okay. Drop your ego and learn to embrace failure. As trainees, we have the privilege and responsibility to learn from every discipline in healthcare. Forget what other people think, learn to laugh at yourself, and use momentary setbacks as an unwavering motivation to try even harder next time.
I'm lucky to work with such bright and ambitious individuals who remind me how promising the next generation of physicians will be! It's an important opportunity to instill good habits, patient awareness, and a team-centered mentality early in their careers!
What are your favorite things to teach students? And for the students, what do you enjoy learning from more experienced trainees and attendings?

My last talk before flying back to Boston: On Friday, 7:30am at the Raffles Makati, I will address the CEOs of the #Harvard Business School #HBS Club of the Philippines on how they can help advance human health in the era of climate change! The breakfast forum is open to everyone - message me if you can be there! (Especially to those I haven’t seen yet - I’m leaving on Saturday!) See you! #ClimateHealth
