Today we held a class on artists books for Paideia, Reed’s annual week of non-academic classes. We showed this book, “Tapestry of Hours” by Anne Greenwood. Inspired by Oregon poet Hazel Hall, who died in 1924, the book unfolds like a quilt. Greenwood hand- and machine-stitched Hall’s poems onto crinoline died in rich colors. 🎨📖
Issue No. 1 - Davi Det Hompson, 1984 Hompson's high contrast ranting head on a mauve field screams about freedom from the IRS, landlords, phone companies and the man. 45 x 69" Two color silkscreen in an edition of 250. This is the print that launched Aqui in Brooklyn 34 years ago. Available at aquieditions.com link in bio #fluxus#artistsbooks#alternativespaces
🌿there are times when I use my art to soothe me, to calm those anxious demons that can take up residence in my soul. In the last two days horrific fires are burning to the south of me here in California . Although I am in a safe spot, the smell of smoke and the thin, pale orange, ash-tinged light pulls up hard memories for me of my own home burning in such a fire several years ago. Today I was working on some small pages for an art book I’m making and this one just emerged. It surprised me. Not my usual palette, the black ink I rubbed on the edges took on the look of something singed. And yet everything about how it turned out seemed right to me, and in a strange way, it calmed me. The power of art to heal never ceases to amaze me. Please send your thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by these terrible disasters. 🌿

I spent New Years Eve *finally* getting around to finishing the binding on my 2017 sketchbook. I still have a few blank pages, which is good because I have only just started building my 2018 sketchbook. Happy New Year!
